In a nutshell, Fair Trade is a way of doing business with developing countries. As it currently stands, Western countries call the shots when paying international workers in developing countries. Manufacturers have to meet the price they’re given or Western countries will take their business elsewhere. Because developing countries are desperate for work, they’ll take anything they can get, even if it means their workers are desperately poor. Fair Trade calls for corporate and ethical responsibility. Rather than demanding the “cheapest” labor, fair trade calls for fair labor. A fair trade company ensures that the workers are being treated fairly and paid fairly, according to their country’s standard of living. In other words, fair trade wages in a developing country wouldn’t be the same as minimum wage in the U.S. Their wages are in scale with the country’s economy.
How is Living Room Clothing Fair Trade? Living Room Clothing believes that any fair trade is good fair trade. Our company is focused on the manufacturing side of fair trade, ensuring that the overseas organizations sewing our clothing are paying and treating their employees fairly. The goal of Living Room Clothing is to bring fair trade into the U.S. mainstream, one step at a time. We understand that the average consumer is not going to pay more for a fair trade t-shirt, and quite frankly, they don’t have to. Our business model calls for better quality, better styles, and better colors while requiring fair trade manufacturing. Simply put, we’re able to offer apparel at the same price as non fair trade clothing, because our company is willing to make less money per item. We believe it’s our ethical responsibility to do this.
